When we look at our professional journey, we can probably say that we have had feelings of uncertainty and unease at various stages of our life. Whether changing direction or stepping into a role that may seem beyond our capabilities, we can feel uncertain, overwhelmed or anxious. The value of this uncertainty is often not at the forefront of our thinking, as we are so consumed with trying to a achieve the responsibilities assigned to a new role. However, we should not underestimate the importance of being put in a zone of unease. This brings about opportunities of reflection and growth as we question our every step, being mindful of what and how we do things, while being thoughtful in new and complex scenarios. For me personally, my passion of educational leadership has taken me to places of uncertainty, where I have frequently walked along a path of uncertainty, but my wonderment to learn new things has driven me forward. Having worked for a service for 8 years I became comfortable and even though I had a great connection to the place, the value to leave was very much outweighed to stay. Hard decisions are part of life, but the decisions we make are ours and ours alone, life is about making choices. The interweaving paths of life, destiny?

Working with children, families and educators from diverse and culturally linguistic backgrounds was an area that really fascinated me and an area I really thought would make a difference. “Make a difference” a mantra that has followed me in my professional career in Australia and the UK. What did this mean? I am still searching, trying to find the answer. What does ‘Making a difference mean,’ in the context of a service, what can I do, what values can I add? Giving children and families hope and optimism maybe? Seeing smiles and providing a vision for them to start a new life in Australia. Over the last two years I have seen a change in my own professional outlook, working with and walking with respect, humility and vision. An educational leader walks with eyes wide open, listening with new perspectives and seeking the uncomfortable. The value of not knowing can seem uncomfortable, however ‘Seeing things differently’, can open many new doors. Be adventurous, take an opportunity and make a difference!! Walking on an uncomfortable road is so invigorating.
